Our Physicians
    The Eye Institute of Essex is staffed by physicians who have specialized in diverse areas of ophthalmology (science which treats the structure, functions and diseases of the eye). These specialties include cataract microsurgery and intraocular lens implantation, diagnosis and treatment of retinal and vitreous diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular hole and retinal detachment, corneal diseases and their treatment such as corneal transplant surgery and Excimer laser refractive surgery LASIK and LASEK, glaucoma and cosmetic plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, tear ducts and eye orbits. Members of the Medical Staff are all board certified and Fellowship trained in their area of expertise. Philip N. Eichler, M.D., F.A.C.S.

    Medical Director and Founder of the Eye Institute of Essex, has been practicing in Belleville since 1969. A native of New Jersey, Dr. Eichler, one of the pioneers in intraocular lens implantation, introduced the microsurgical technique to the New Jersey area in 1975. Following 37 years of surgical practice, Dr. Eichler currently practices medical ophthalmology, including pre and post surgical care, glaucoma, routine eye care and contact lens fittings. He is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and a Diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmolgy. Dr. Eichler is a Vietnam Veteran, having served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, the 3rd Field Hospital, Saigon, Republic of Vietnam from 1964-1966.

Joel D. Eichler, M.D.

    Ophthalmologist and staff surgeon is board certified in Ophthalmology and has completed a Vitreoretinal Fellowship. Dr. Eichler's scope of expertise and practice includes some of the most advanced surgical techniques and laser treatments for diseases of the retina and vitreous, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration and use of various injectable medications used in the treatment of macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Eichler serves as Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ. He is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and member of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthamology and the Retina Society of New Jersey.

Andrew Goldbaum, M.D.

    Ophthalmologist and staff surgeon, Dr. Goldbaum, is widely recognized for his expertise in oculoplastic surgery. He is Board Certified in ophthalmology and a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Goldbaum performs the most innovative surgical treatment for correction of ptosis (drooping eyelids), cosmetic eyelid surgery, thyroid eye disease, orbital tumors and orbital reconstruction following ocular trauma, removal and reconstruction of malignant eyelid and facial lesions and minimally invasive tear duct surgery for the relief of blocked tear ducts. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the New York State Ophthalmological Society and the Medical Society of the State of New York.

Cary M. Silverman, M.D.

    Ophthalmologist and Staff Physician, Dr. Silverman specializes in innovative LASIK correction, state-of-the-art refractive cataract surgery, as well as an array of other refractive surgery options for patients who are not candidates for LASIK.  His expertise includes clear cornea cataract extraction with traditional intraocular lens implant or multifocal intraocular lens implant surgery.  He is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Keratoplasty, the Medical Society of New Jersey and the Morris County Medical Society.    He is a member of the Medical Staff of River Drive Surgery Center, Elmwood Park, NJ, St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, NJ and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, NJ.

Nicholas Xanthos, OD

     Staff Optometrist has been in practice in the Essex County area since 2001 and joined our staff in September 2008.  He is a valuable member of our staff providing comprehensive vision care services including eye glass prescriptions, contact lens fitting and evaluation, and complete eye examinations.  Dr. Xanthos also provides specialized low vision services for patients with decreased vision due to macular degeneration, glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.  Dr. Xanthos is a member of the American Optometric Association, Member of Beta Sigma Kappa International Honor Society and a Volunteer for the Lions Club of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Diana Zabarko, OD

     Staff Optometrist has been providing comprehensive optometry care since 2002 and joined our practice in October 2008.  As a valuable part of our physician staff she provides complete eye care including eye glass prescriptions, contact lens fitting and evaluation and comprehensive ophthalmic care.  Dr. Zabarko is a member of the American Optometric Society and participates with community vision screenings.
